The phrase “Il Divo” means “divine male performer” in Italian. Perhaps has a name never been more fitting than for the four gentlemen who make up the singing group Il Divo. Il Divo is a group created by star maker Simon Cowell, the man who knows how to spot true talent. It took Cowell two years to scour the globe looking for just the right talent for the group. The group, comprised of French pop singer Sébastien Izambard, Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, American tenor David Miller, and Swiss tenor Urs Bühler is truly a multinational effort. The members of Il Divo sing a unique genre best described as “operatic pop.” They sing their unique brand of music in English, Italian, Spanish, and French.
Il Divo has sold more than 26 million albums worldwide and has enchanted legions of fans with its signature vocal blend and new and exciting arrangements of familiar songs. Il Divo will be in Las Vegas as part of the 2012 world tour, which is the group’s fourth tour. The show is sure to be a smashing success, partially because of the artistic genius of show designer and creative director Brian Burke. Las Vegas audiences may be familiar with Burke’s work. He was artistic director for the Las Vegas show La Reve and also for Celine Dion’s A New Day show at Caesars Palace.
Concert-goers can expect stunning visual and musical elements with the newest Il Divo show. Burke explains, "IL DIVO is the perfect modern fusion of opera, theatre and concert performance. It is a privilege as a director to create a visual landscape inviting the audience on a theatrical journey of their music.”
Fans can expect many of their Il Divo favorites along with songs from “Wicked Game,” Il Divo’s fifth and newest studio album. They sing a dramatic interpretation of the Chris Isaak song “Wicked Game” and a stirring rendition of Roy Orbison’s hit “Crying.”
A biography about Il Divo is titled “Romancing the World,” and indeed, this is what Il Divo has done and continues to do. Legions of fans run the gamut from teenage girls who swoon over the handsome members of the group to older fans who appreciate the sheer talent it takes to perform this genre of music. Il Divo was recently named Artist of the Decade at the BRIT awards and is considered a pioneer in the classical crossover genre. The group has more than 150 gold and platinum awards in 33 countries and has sold over two million concert tickets. Il Divo’s album “Ancora” was the only crossover classical album to enter the Billboard Top 200 at number one.
Group member Urs Bühler says, “We’re constantly trying to push things upwards to a different level. Whenever we do something new, we want to do it better. And we’re still managing to do that, which fills me with great satisfaction.” He describes the new album as “much more serious, more mature. Since we started, there have been so many people out there trying to do what we do. So we needed to change, or it’s no longer interesting for us, or for the audience.”
There’s no disputing or ignoring the fact that the four members of Il Divo are extremely good-looking, and surely that fact is part of their appeal. But look past the appearance of these guys and you’ll find a depth and emotion to their music that most of today’s contemporary artists just don’t possess. This is what sets Il Divo apart from many of the other popular acts out there today. The members of Il Divo can’t wait to embark on their latest world tour. And Las Vegas is ready for Il Divo.
