Seth Meyers is known for the rapier wit he brings to “Saturday Night Live” on a regular basis. He was co-head writer of SNL with Tina Fey and became the sole head writer when Fey left the show. To understand the talent of Seth Myers, you only need to know that Tina Fey credits Meyers with writing Fey’s Sarah Palin sketches—some of the funniest political satire to come along in some time.
Along with his coveted role of head writer at Saturday Night Live, This New England native is also the anchor of the show’s popular Weekend Update, a seat filled by some iconic comedians including Dan Aykroyd and David Spade. Meyers currently holds the title of longest-tenured cast member on Saturday Night Live He joined the cast in 2001.
Along with his role on Weekend Update, Meyers has appeared in other popular sketches including Nerod in “Appalachian Emergency Room,” William Fitzpatrick from the Irish talk show “Top o’ the Morning,” and as Ron Weasly in a “Harry Potter” spoof. He is known for spot-on impressions of John Kerry, Anderson Cooper, Carrot Top, Prince Charles, Tobey Maguire, Peyton Manning, Ty Pennington, Brian Williams, Donalt Trump, Jr., Tom Cruise, and Kevin Federline. He has appeared in several movies including 2011’s “I Don’t Know How She Does It” with Sarah Jessica Parker and “New Year’s Eve” with Robert DeNiro, Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Abigail Breslin, and Katherine Heigl.
Now Meyers is bringing his cerebral, witty brand of humor to the Mirage in Las Vegas for a one-night show. His stage presence is practically legendary. Along with hosting the Webby Awards in 2008 and 2009 and the ESPY Awards on ESPN in 2010 and 2011, he was the keynote speaker at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner this past year. To put it mildly, he killed. This is a crowd where political humor is king, and Meyers nailed it, offending Donald Trump, who was sitting in the audience with a stone-faced stare, and making President Obama laugh out loud in the process.
It is the season for politics. Meyer’s brand of political satire and humor is always funny, but in this heated political season his material seems particularly hilarious. Not all comedy writers are able to step away from the notebook and jump onstage to perform stand-up comedy. While a great comedy writer may not be great at delivering jokes, a great joke teller may need someone to write his jokes for him. That’s what makes Meyers so unique. He’s able to put the jokes down on paper and also deliver them with accuracy and wit. If you’re a Meyers fan, and you haven’t started following him on Twitter, you should. His Twitter handle is @sethmeyers21. Some of Meyer’s recent zingers, straight off Twitter, include:
• “Remember, if you didn't get invited to the State of the Union, it means you're the Secretary of Agriculture.”
• “If Obama releases his grades and they're straight As that proves to me he wasn't born here.”
Meyers recently sold out his performance in Pittsburg where he described presidential-election dropout Rick Perry as being your guy "if George Bush was too cerebral for you," and Ron Paul as "looking like the old guy in horror movies who warns the kids that the house is haunted."
Oh, and in case you’re wondering what Meyers could have said at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner that could have caused Donald Trump to get so upset, here you go:
• "Donald Trump said that he was running for president as a Republican. That's funny, because I thought he was running as a joke."
• "Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pageant, which is great for Republicans because it will streamline their search for vice president."
