47-Year-Old Holyfield to Fight in Las Vegas Again
The Nevada Athletic Commission has granted Evander Holyfield a “one-fight” boxing license, contingent on Holyfield getting a retinal inspection before any future Nevada fights.
One member of the boxing commission voted against granting the license to Holyfield, citing concerns over the 47-year-old fighter’s condition. Holyfield has lost five of his last nine bouts. The member asked that a neurologist and medical advisory board examine Holyfield. It was found in an earlier examination that Holyfield has retinal scarring.
It is expected that Holyfield may fight against 41-year-old Frans Botha in April at the Orleans. Holyfield has not had a match in Vegas since his loss against James Toney in 2003. He told the Nevada Athletic Commission, "I still have my hand speed." he added, "I'm a busy fighter. I feel great."
Holyfield is perhaps most favorite for the bout he fought against Mike Tyson in 1997, where Tyson bit Holyfield’s ears twice. Tyson was banned from boxing in Las Vegas after the incident.
