Skiing at Mt. Charleston Less Than 1 Hour from Las Vegas
January 28, 2013
You may be surprised to learn that Las Vegas, which is known for its heat, offers some skiing options. We’re not talking about indoor skiing either! Technically, the skiing action isn’t in Las Vegas; it’s just a short one-hour drive away at Mt. Charleston. Either way, that’s not a bad distance for the dessert!
If you’re looking to burn off some energy from all of those endless buffet meals on the Las Vegas strip, then jetting out west on a short little drive to Mt. Charleston’s Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort might be the perfect solution for you and your family. You can easily enjoy a hearty breakfast in your Las Vegas hotel, head out for a day of skiing, and then return by dinner. One word of advice: if you decide to go skiing – especially if you have kids – don’t plan too much for the evening. More likely than not, everyone will be wiped out from a day on the slopes!
On average, temperatures on Mt. Charleston (a striking 11,918 feet high) are about 20-30 degrees cooler. The refreshing weather on Mt. Charleston isn’t just for skiing. Many tourists (and locals) enjoy horseback riding, hiking, or just bringing a picnic for the afternoon. During the summer months (May-September), camping facilities are open.
The young and friendly staff members at Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort handle everything from equipment rentals to lessons. Complete novices as well as experienced skiers can enjoy themselves on the slopes of Mt. Charleston. Of course, don’t expect to find slopes on the same level as the ones further up north in Colorado and the Rockies. However, for tourists who are already in Las Vegas, this skiing option is a great opportunity.
If you’ve ever gone skiing on Mt. Charleston, we’d love to know what you think. Share your opinion about this experience with other readers of Shows Las Vegas Insider’s Tips. Would you go again?
