When Celine Dion retired her show at Caesars Palace Las Vegas, many were wondering what would happen to the Colosseum show room created especially for the production. How would Caesar’s Las Vegas be able to top the Celine Dion show? Who could sell enough show tickets to fill the 4,148 seat venue on a regular basis? One word. Cher.
Cher at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace is not just a concert—this Las Vegas show is a visually stunning production that showcases the illustrious 44 year career of a music icon.
Those who remember the groovy Sonny and Cher of the 1960s won’t be disappointed. Neither will the fans of Cher’s 1970s variety show, fans of the outrageously outfitted Cher of the 1980s, fans of the acclaimed actress and Oscar winning Cher of 1988, or fans of the dance-club diva of the 1990s. In her Las Vegas show, Cher has all the decades covered.
Cher’s Las Vegas show at Caesars Palace begins with clips of Sonny and Cher through the years. As the opening for the song “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” begins, Cher emerges 40 feet above the audience on a small moving stage that carries her to the main stage. The song is especially poignant and the moment is dramatic.
The show moves along at a fast clip while Cher sings some of her more recent hits including “Song for the Lonely,” “I Found Someone,” and “Believe.” She also sings her classics including “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,” “Dark Lady,” “Half Breed,” and the song she made famous with Sonny, “The Beat Goes On.”
Cher has always given Sonny credit for making her the woman and entertainer she is today and has called him “the most unforgettable character I’ve ever met.” She offers a very moving tribute to him during her Las Vegas show.
The costume changes coincide with several of the songs. There’s a go-go 60s vibe to the costume worn during “The Beat Goes On,” and even an elaborate floor-length feather head dress for “Half Breed.” Cher is known the world over for her acting, her singing, and even her love life, but she’s also notorious for her over-the-top costumes. Bob Mackie has been Cher’s costume designer since the variety show days, and he has designed all of her lavish feathered and bejeweled costumes for her Las Vegas show. It’s worth the price of the show tickets just to see Mackie’s incredible creations.
While each costume change only takes about two minutes, there’s still plenty of action onstage while Cher is changing into another dazzling outfit. There are 14 dancers, 4 aerialists, and a full band that accompany Cher throughout the show.
As Cher dons her notorious fishnet body stocking, black leather bodysuit, and sailor hat to sing “Turn Back Time,” she looks just as energetic as she did in her 1989 video for the song. In Cher’s Las Vegas show at Caesars Palace, she does indeed turn back time—and then moves forward.
