David Spade

“Saturday Night Live” is responsible for launching many comedians into superstardom. David Spade is no exception. He was a cast member and writer on the show from 1990 to 1996. “Saturday Night Live” is also responsible for introducing hundreds of catch-phrases into the American vernacular as a result of the hilarious skits that have always been a part of the show. A cast member knows he or she has really made it when a line they’ve delivered on Saturday night is repeated at water coolers in offices around the country the following Monday morning. Spade’s “Saturday Night Live” characters have added quite a few of these catch phrases into pop culture, including one from a skit where he played an airline attendant who gave an annoyed “Buh-bye” and even a nudge on the back to disembarking passengers. This world-weary and sarcastic persona also served Spade well in roles following his work on “Saturday Night Live,” including that as the acid-tongued receptionist Dennis Finch in the hit television comedy “Just Shoot Me!” That role garnered him an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations. He also co-starred in several movies with “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Farley. Spade and Farley were on track to become a great comedic paring on the big screen when Farley died an untimely death at the age of 33. The quick wit and cutting sarcasm that has become the unofficial trademark of David Spade translates well to the Las Vegas stage. David Spade show ticket holders quickly discover that he is not the sort of stand-up comedian that spouts off one-liners. He uses a gentle setup before he goes in for the kill. The kill usually has something to do with pop culture—celebrities, reality TV, and even those big warehouse stores. In his Las Vegas show he manages to find the nugget of silliness in just about any situation and magnify it a thousand times. You might find yourself thinking, “He’s right. I’ve noticed the same thing” as he dissects a situation, turning it into a hilarious absurdity. Even though Spade is quick to point out the foolishness of just about every situation, he’s not above laughing a bit at himself as well. He adds just the right amount of self deprecation to his Las Vegas show. He pokes fun at the fact that he’s surrounded onstage by oil barrels and other props and accoutrements used in the Las Vegas show “Stomp!” because the same theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino houses both David Spade and “Stomp!” The industrial backdrop is actually an excellent accompaniment to Spade’s pared-down Las Vegas show. Spade says that his inspiration for his Las Vegas comedy act is simply his life and the events that take place every day. He says that a lot of his material is really true, although he may embellish a bit to kick the story up a notch. “There’s always a way to go ‘okay, I can use this, oh this is a good story.’ I kind of exaggerate reality.”
