Jay Leno

4

Although best known for replacing Johnny Carson on the "Tonight Show," Jay Leno started his career as a stand-up comedian and continued doing stand-up work throughout his seventeen years on the late-night show.

When Jay Leno hosted his final "Tonight Show” in May 2009, his fans wondered what he would do next. Leno had no plans for slowing down, however. He is hitting new strides with his successful stand-up career. Leno's standup act is raucous yet he works pretty clean--and you can bet that there will be plenty of audience involvement.

A handful of comedians are uniquely suited to the Las Vegas stage and Leno is certainly one of them. His witty brand of observational humor and subtle ways of pointing out the obvious absurdity in every-day situations has landed him legions of fans. His effortless yet hilarious "Tonight Show" monologues and bits were frequent watercooler fodder for an entire generation.

One of the "Tonight Show's" most memorable bits was "Jay Walking." In this sketch, Jay would go to busy Los Angeles locations and ask passersby questions. The questions were simple and painfully easy, but of course someone would always answer them wrong. Funny, yes; but Leno's deadpan comments were the best part of the whole bit. Leno: Who was buried in Grant's Tomb? Passerby: George Washington? Leno: Very good! And Grant was buried in Washington's Tomb? Passerby: Ummmm.

Never one to rest on his laurels, or indeed to ever rest, Leno is launching a prime time show, "The Jay Leno Show" in fall of 2009. He's also scheduled a series of Las Vegas shows at the Mirage over the next several months. It would seem that the "Tonight Show's" loss is the Las Vegas strip's gain.
