Rent any DVD or watch any television show set in Las Vegas, and you’re bound to see them: Las Vegas showgirls. Anyone who doesn’t know better would expect showgirls to be ubiquitous in Las Vegas. But where are all the showgirls these days? Take a survey of Las Vegas shows, and not many of them seem to be featuring showgirls these days. There are still plenty of showgirls in Las Vegas. You just need to know where to look. One of the best places to look is Jubilee! This production show offers a taste of the real Las Vegas, past and present. Jubilee! has been wowing Las Vegas audiences since 1981 with it’s talented performers, lavish costumes, and stunning sets. This Don Arden-directed Las Vegas extravaganza features over 100 performers, both female and male. The show includes 50 topless female performers, but there are also show tickets available for performances of Jubilee! where the dancers are not topless. In order to be a dancer in Jubilee! performers must be of a certain height—and it doesn’t hurt if most of that height is in the legs. When all of the showgirls are assembled onstage in this Las Vegas show, the uniformity of appearance and synchronicity of movement is awesome. The showgirls have perfected that “showgirl glide,” where they seem to slide across the stage popping their hips and barely moving their knees. The stage for this Las Vegas show is huge--half the length of a football field to be exact. The stage of Jubilee! can be transformed into 17 different sets. Showgirls and showboys rise from the floor, are lowered from the ceiling, and descend a spiral staircase. The creator of Jubilee has managed to fit seven separate elaborate numbers into a 90-minute show. Showgirl and showboy acts are interspersed with other rotating acts including acrobats, a silk aerialist, strength and hand balancing acts, jugglers, and even Argentinian gauchos. Each act of Jubilee! tells a story in spectacular Las Vegas fashion. The lavish Sampson and Delilah number features granite arches, opulent fabrics, and costumes that resemble Arabian Nights. Another scene is a tribute to the Titanic. The Titanic scene features dancers wearing costumes from the art-deco era. There’s an iceberg collision and 3,000 gallons of water to add to the drama of the scene. The grand finale of Jubilee! is a tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers complete with top hat and tails for the gentlemen. This final number is befitting a Las Vegas show that, even after 25-plus years, brings in ticket holders who want true Las Vegas entertainment.Jubilee! is an homage to the glitz and glamour of old Las Vegas complete with sequined bikinis, Swarovski crystals, and 35-pound feathered head dresses designed by the same designer who designs for Cher, Bob Mackie. There are newer shows on the Las Vegas strip, but for those who have a vision of Las Vegas that includes showgirls and lavish stage productions, Jubilee! does not disappoint.
