KA - Cirque du Soleil

4

KA Cirque du Soleil features the gravity-defying acrobatics that are the hallmark of the Cirque du Soleil productions along with martial arts, sophisticated puppetry, and a true multimedia experience. Show ticket holders will experience a timeless good and evil narrative as only Cirque du Soleil can deliver. The KA Las Vegas show is a bit of a departure from other Cirque du Soleil productions. While other Cirque du Soleil shows are meant to evoke thoughts or feelings through vignettes, KA audiences are treated to a linear story. KA is the story of twins separated early in life due to tragic circumstances. They must undergo a journey fraught with twists and turns in order to reunite and fulfill their destinies. The KA experience begins the moment Las Vegas show ticket holders enter the theater. The ushers are in character and truly usher audience members into another world. The theater has a postmodern industrial and mysterious esthetic. As with any Cirque du Soleil show, the performers are unparalleled in their sheer talent and athleticism. With KA, the unique stage is what sets this show apart from others. The stage of this Las Vegas show is actually a floating platform, aided with a hydrolic system that moves to give the audience different vantage points. The stage rotates and transforms with the story progression. KA would not be possible or have the impact it has without this stage.  Performers leap, hurtle, and scale up and down the moving stage as it conveys changing scenes and landscapes. Performers not only move vertically, but they move horizontally as well. What seems like movie special effects are in fact real stunts. Some scenes in KA are reminiscent of the films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and The Matrix. Martial artists ascend from the ceiling, engaged in choreographed battle scenes where they leap over one and other, giving the effect of slow motion. One epic battle scene evolves into a precision sword dance that combines tumbling, dancing, and juggling. As with most Cirque du Soleil shows, however, the action doesn’t just take place on the stage. There’s action above, behind, and next to the audience. There’s a lot going on at once. The aptly named “wheel of death” is one of those gravity defying moments that Cirque du Soleil is famous for. Performers run inside dual cages suspended high in the air, much like a hamster in a wheel. As another performer runs on the outside of the wheel, it’s propelled up, over and around in a complete revolution. As the wheel moves faster and faster, the performer on the outside of the wheel incorporates a jump rope into his movement. If ever there was a moment of utter amazement during this Las Vegas show, this is it. KA Cirque du Soleil combines stirring imagery, epic storytelling, and performers that seem to have been training for the show their entire lives. From the shifting stage to the stunts, KA leaves the Las Vegas audience wondering, “How do they do that?”
