Le Reve

Le Reve—The Dream. The dreamlike show at the Wynn Las Vegas is aptly named for a famous work of art by Picasso—a work of art owned by Steve Wynn, who also owns this world-class resort. The masterpiece depicts Marie-Therese Walter, Pablo Picasso’s mistress, asleep in a chair. The artwork takes on particular significance at the Wynn because the day before Steve Wynn was set to sell the painting for $139 million, he poked a six inch hole in it. After repair, it was valued at $85 million. From dream to nightmare. Fortunately, the Las Vegas show leaves a much better impression. This Franco Dragone creation takes place in a theater in the round with a 1.5 million gallon pool as the centerpiece. Because of the design of the space, every seat in the house is no more than twelve rows from the stage, giving this Las Vegas show an intimate feel. The seats are said to be some of the largest and most luxurious of all the Las Vegas shows. The color palette of the Le Reve show evokes the colors in the Picasso work of art, giving the Las Vegas audience the sensation of actually being inside the painting. Even though Wynn Las Vegas opened in 2005, the Le Reve theater recently underwent an extensive $8 million renovation. The colors of the painting have also been incorporated into the theater design, featuring opulent reds, glowing ambers, and gilded accents. The 70-minute Las Vegas show is based on a woman’s dreams—one can imagine that it’s the woman from the painting. An ethereal female being moves in and out of the story as an apparition. As show ticket holders are drawn into the performance, Le Reve becomes their dream as well. The vignettes appear as dreams woven together—as one may experience a series of dreams in a night’s sleep. A few minutes prior to the scheduled show time, the theater begins to come alive as performers slowly emerge from the glowing water and whimsical characters move throughout the audience. With a dramatic flash of fire rolling across the water, the show begins. As performers plunge from great heights and with tremendous force into the pool, others are suspended in midair, performing dances in the sky. Synchronized swimmers remain submerged in water for what seems like an eternity with only legs and bright red shoes showing and keeping perfect time with each other and the music. A human-tree is formed by acrobats and gymnasts, and just like leaves falling from a tree, the show performers fall from the tree into the water. As leaves falling from a tree often twist and undulate, so do these human leaves. Le Reve is more sophisticated and sensual than some of the other Las Vegas shows. Although there’s no nudity and the action is never vulgar, this Las Vegas show does celebrate sensuality and the human body.
