The Lion King

4

Hakuna Matata means no worries, and for those that have been waiting for The Lion King to make its way to the Las Vegas stage, the wait and worry is over. This colorful and soul-stirring Broadway smash hit appears at the Mandalay Bay in very much the same form that it originally appeared on the Broadway stage.

Adapted from the animated Disney hit movie, the Lion King is the story of Simba, son of Mufasa, the king of the lions. The show begins with a newborn Simba being presented by the wise Rafiki to the gathered animals of the pride lands. Simba leads an idyllic life in the pride lands. Mufasa's jealous brother, however, plots to upset the delicate balance in the pride lands, and Simba is driven from his home.

Lost and alone, Simba encounters Timon, the meerkat, and Pumbaa, the warthog. They take him into their jungle home and teach him about their "hakuna matata" carefree lifestyle. He stays with them as he grows into a young man.

Simba is soon called upon to return to the pride lands and claim his rightful place as heir to his father's throne. He must confront his evil uncle Scar and gather the courage to stand up to him. The show ends much as it began--with a newborn cub being presented by Rafiki to the inhabitants of the pride lands. This time, the new life is the child of Simba and Nala--thus completing the circle of life.

The Lion King features elaborate and colorful costumes, life-sized puppets, ornate African masks, and stunning set design. The Tony Award-winning direction and design of The Lion King comes from the brilliant mind of Julie Taymor, an acclaimed director who has also been nominated for an Academy Award. In all, the Lion King has won six Tony Awards, including one for best musical. The score by Elton John and Tim Rice includes songs "Hakuna Matata," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," "Circle of Life," and "I Just Can't Wait to be King."

While The Lion King film was meant for a junior audience, the stage production has been enjoyed by audience members of all ages. This moving and visually stunning Las Vegas show has something for everyone.
