It’s hard to put Penn Jillette and his partner Teller (yes, that’s his real, legal name) in just one category. They are magicians, TV show hosts, skeptics, authors, and in the case of Jillette, a former contestant on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Penn & Teller are probably best known as magicians, but because of the duo’s avowed skepticism regarding just about anything, Penn is quick to point out that what they are doing is not “magic.” Those who purchase show tickets to the Penn & Teller show can expect to be entertained with a combination of comedy, illusion, and yes, even a few tricks that look like magic at this Las Vegas show.

Teller is known as the silent one, but he has been known to utter a word or two on occasion. He always seem to be the guinea pig or test pilot…and usually the one put in what appears to be harm’s way during much of the show while the very chatty Jillette talks nonstop. Jillette has taken on the persona of a huckster and raconteur since they started their act in the early 1980s.

Another Penn & Teller trademark is to divulge the secrets to a trick in the midst of performing the trick. For show ticket holders to this Las Vegas show, the effect of this candor is disorientation and amazement. While the Las Vegas audience thinks they are in on the secret, things take a complete turn and the real trick is revealed, leaving the audience mystified. While Jillette performs a running monologue throughout a trick, Teller also manages to maintain a stage presence through his body language and facial expressions.

Ticket holders of the Las Vegas show will find the portions of the show where Penn & Teller reveal their methods funny and entertaining. The audience is left amazed and puzzled when this talented duo actually perform an illusion without revealing their methods. There are several “How is that done?” moments throughout the show.

In their Las Vegas show, Penn & Teller perform a fairly old illusion called the “bullet catch.” An audience member will place his or her initials on two bullets which are then put into two guns. Penn & Teller stand at opposite ends of the stage and fire the guns at each other. The bullets penetrate and shatter two pieces of glass and are caught in their mouths. The trick is old, but the effect is shocking. It seems impossible that they could catch bullets in their mouths, but the glass did shatter and the initialed bullets that were put in the guns’ chambers are now in the performers’ mouths. Penn is quick to point out that this is indeed a trick and not magic--but that’s what makes Penn & Teller so unique. Unlike other magicians who use smoke, mirrors, and puffy shirts to maintain an aura of mystery, Penn & Teller let the Las Vegas show audience in on the trick just enough to astound.
